CHAPLIN STUDIOS
Chaplin Studios is a historic Hollywood creative space with a legacy that spans more than a century of filmmaking, music and artistic collaboration. Founded by Charlie Chaplin in 1917, the property was originally created as a production studio for Chaplin’s independent film work and became one of the earliest examples of a creator-built studio environment in Hollywood.
Over the decades, the studio evolved alongside the entertainment industry. Following its original era as Chaplin’s film studio, the property became A&M Studios, where it played an important role in the development of contemporary recorded music, and later operated as Henson Studios under The Jim Henson Company. Across these chapters, the facility welcomed generations of artists, producers, engineers and creators who contributed to its enduring place in popular culture.
In 2024, musician and songwriter John Mayer and filmmaker and producer McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) acquired the property and brought back its original Chaplin Studios name, continuing a tradition of preserving creative spaces with deep artistic histories. Their involvement reflects a shared interest in maintaining a place where musicians and creators can come together to develop new work while honoring the studio’s remarkable past.
Mayer’s connection to Chaplin Studios is also personal. As an artist, he has recorded at the facility and experienced firsthand the value of a dedicated creative environment shaped by generations of musicians. His partnership with McG represents an effort to protect and carry forward a space where collaboration, craftsmanship and experimentation remain central to the creative process.
